Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word which means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a break of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and record a new album with an entirely new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
